EDDY. The funeral service of the late PETER DONALD (Don) Thursday, June 18, 1998 29 LEGAL NOTICES 17 The Sydney Morning Herald OBITUARIES Mac Corbett Joseph Harsch, CBE in any section of the paper Corbett got the money. In a March 1975 dispute over margins (above award payments), the then secretary of the Australian Journalists' Association, Jim North, wrote to management of Corbett's "meritorious service with the company" over 43 years. Alas, the margin was not restored, which may have had something to do with Corbett's decision the following month to take 30 weeks' long service leave. Alas again, he suffered a heart attack in May 1975, starting his long leave in the intensive care unit of Hornsby Hospital.

When he returned he joined The Sun-Herald but retired in 1978 on grounds of ill-health; he had worked for the two newspapers for 45 years and nine months. During his career he played a pivotal role in the development and prosperity of the Journalists' Club at a time when it was much more than a poker machine-infested waterhole. He was a member of the club's committee, its treasurer and, later, its president. Many still remember Corbett's sense of humour and his love of music his jazz collection was famous. But he is particularly well remembered for his endless patience with the faltering grammar of generations of journalists.

He is survived by his wife, Joan, daughter, Lyndall, and son, Leith. It has been left to a nephew to carry on the journalistic tradition; he is the reporter Peter Harvey, of the Nine of this century. Hugh Macintosh, who made and lost several fortunes, would see his name carried on by his grandson. The young Mac Corbett was educated at Scots College, and at Waverly College where the Corbett Cup is still the dominant sporting trophy. Corbett joined The Sun on Anzac Day, 1932.

He started as a cadet journalist and his colleagues included, he would later recall, one Errol Flynn, who went on to greater fame in other arenas. At the outbreak of World War II, Corbett joined the AIF, serving with the Seventh Division in the Middle East. Returning to Australia in 1943, he married Joan. They didn't have much time together; Mac was posted to officer training school and then with amphibious units to Borneo and Malaya. They called his DUKW, an amphibious truck, "Mac's He ended the war as a lieutenant, and returned to The Sun.

Most of his work was on the subs' desk (the sub-editors' desk where raw prose was turned into finished articles). He would eventually become the chief make-up and layout sub-editor (responsible for the paper's daily production and design). In the mid-1970s Corbett acted often as The Sun's chief sub-editor and, on Saturdays and public holidays, as its overall editor. And he was highly regarded by his peers. In 1969, the then editor of the Sun, Jack Tier, supported his application for a pay increase with the ultimate compliment: "He can be thrown into any gap It was the Japanese raid on Pearl Harbour.

Harsch woke his wife: "You have often asked me what an air raid sounds like," he told her. "This is a good imitation." As late as the 1980s he was still a familiar figure in foreign ministries and at press conferences. He took a particular interest in the Middle East, and wrote sympathetically, but critically, about Israel, particularly at the time of the invasion of Lebanon. A lifelong liberal, he was never afraid to criticise American presidents' use of power. As late as 1987, he described the US as an "imperial power" in its relations with South Korea, arguing that it therefore had the right to intervene in its internal affairs to prevent a conflict with North Korea.

Harsch broadcast for all three major US networks, first CBS, then NBC and later ABC, as well as working regularly for the BBC. In recent years he published an autobiography, At the Hinge of History. He was very well known in London, where on at least one occasion he lunched with the Queen, who made him a CBE. He became the Christian Science Monitor's chief editorial writer was well as producing a much admired, often imitated column. He had a great gift for explaining the most complex tangles of foreign diplomacy and intrigue in simple terms.

He was happily married for 65 years to Anne, the daughter of an American admiral, who died in January last year. Late last month he married his long-time research assistant, Edna Raemer. He is survived by three sons. The Guardian, London Sub-editor 1918-1998 The last survivor of an extraordinary quartet of Sydney journalists, Mac Corbett has died in a Sydney nursing home at the age of" 83. The Corbetts were one of Sydney's more prominent and best-read afternoon newspaper families.

Mac Corbett also played another role, giving much of his time and energy to the media community as a key figure in the management of the renowned, now defunct, Journalists Club. Known universally and affectionately as Mac, his father was Claude Corbett, a writer and editor. His uncles, W. F. (Bill) and Jack, were also mainstays in sporting journalism.

Like Mac, they all worked primarily for The Sun newspaper when it was owned by Associated Newspapers. At one period during 1939 all four were working on that paper. One of Corbett's proudest memories goes to a period in the late 1930s when the Corbett quartet had a stranglehold on coverage of rugby league football in Sydney. It was not uncommon for articles by Corbett, his father and his uncles to grace the pages of a single edition of the Sun. Harold Macintosh Corbett was born in the eastern suburbs.

His mother was Lily May Fowles who, according to family lore, could trace her ancestry back to the First Fleet. She was the adopted daughter of Hugh D. Macintosh, a Sydney entrepreneur and the owner of the city's Evening News in the early part Journalist 1905 1998 His contemporaries were those giants of international journalism Ed Murrow and William L. Shirer. With them Joseph Harsch, who has died aged 93, reported on the rise of fascism in Europe, then covered World War II.

Harsch went on to interpret his native United States to Britain for the BBC. He would become one of the shrewdest observers of international affairs in the Christian Science Monitor, the paper for which he reported for 60 years from 1929 to 1989 astonishing events in international affairs. Harsch was a reliable foreign correspondent and war reporter, but his strength was commentary, informed by his vast experience and even vaster acquaintance. He was a dapper, friendly man with just enough social self-confidence to make him thoroughly at home in grand gentlemen's clubs from London to Washington. When he started work as a reporter in Washington Herbert Hoover was president.

After that, the list of the stories he reported reads like the spinal column of the 20th century. He covered the New Deal in Washington, the rise of Hitler and the London air raids. Perhaps the most dramatic example of his flair for being in the right place at the right time was when he was on his way to Moscow in December 1941. He and his wife Anne were breaking their journey in Hawaii and he was woken by an appalling noise. David English ington correspondent for the Daily Express which eventually promoted him to foreign editor.

In 1968 he was recruited to be editor of the Daily Sketch, which was merged with the Daily Mail a few years later. He made his mark, by engineering the paper into a tabloid to serve what he called "Middle the sort of silent majority of the British populace with which he most closely identified. English is survived by his wife of 44 years, Irene, and children Nikki, Amanda and Neil. The New York Times month. His disenchantment with the Conservative Party under Thatcher's successor, John Major, was reflected in the relatively friendly coverage the Daily Mail has more recently given to the Labour Party.

English had a reputation for ruthlessness and zealous news coverage, stemming from his days as a young reporter. He once stole rnailbags from British Rail for an article about its sloppy security. As an editor, he was known for mercilessly censuring subordinates who did not meet his expectations, but he could be extraordinarily patient with young reporters. Under his leadership the Daily Mail became compulsory reading for Britain's middle class, and its circulation grew to more than 2 million. English joined the Daily Mail's parent, Associated Newspapers, in 1969.

He became editor in 1971, and in 1992 overall editor of the company, which also owns the Mail on Sunday and the Evening Standard. He was an only child. His father died when he was nine months old and his maternal grandparents helped his mother raise him. Early on he developed a fascination with newspapers while reading the three dailies his grandfather received. He also developed a flair for business and helped his mother run a boarding house and later a hotel.

A college dropout, English had started his journalism career as a copy boy for a local paper. His big breaks came as a foreign correspondent for the Sunday Dispatci, where he was remembered for breaking a story about Errol Flynn's sex life. By the age of 30 he had risen to the prestigious post of Wash- Editor 1931 1998 One of the century's most astute journalists he transformed Britain's struggling Daily Mail into a highly influential tabloid and redefined standards of editing and reporting Sir David English has died in London, aged 67, after suffering a stroke. Known for his love and enthusiasm for the news, English was editor of the Daily Mail for 21 years. An ardent supporter of Margaret Thatcher, he was knighted by her in 1982 and was to have been made a life peer this PERSONAL NOTICES Births, Marriages, Deaths EDDY, of Touklev.
