The newcomer was to spend 40 years with the AIM and its famous aerial medical service which would become known the world over first as the Flying Doctor Service, later as the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS). On the death of Flynn in 1951, McKay became superintendent of the RFDS. Although the topography of inland Australia appears today very much as it did when McKay joined the AIM, it was then, in reality, a harsher, less compassionate place. Distance imposed a more unrelenting tyranny. And the endless panoramas of earth and sky presented a more formidable challenge.

McKay became one of Flynn's team of roving ministers known as the Patrol Padres, with each patrol covering an area about the size of Britain. For more than six years he lived mostly in a truck equipped with a pedal radio. There were some odd encounters. On one occasion, visiting an isolated but growing family which had been augmented by the arrival of a new baby, the father, somewhat sheepishly, took McKay aside. "Now will you marry us?" he asked.

Yet it was a life marked by its spirtuality and faith as well as on the proper performance of practical daily tasks. The Patrol Padres were men for all seasons. McKay said once: "We didn't strike any scepticism. No-one said, 'What's the Church about? What are you doing We were taken into the hearts of the people." James Frederick McKay was born at Walkerston, Queensland and educated at Thornborough College, Charters Towers, and Emmanuel College, Brisbane. In early life he had simply felt called to the Presbyterian ministry, but once with Flynn it was apparent that his warm, sympathetic nature as well as physical resilience and practical skills equipped him perfectly for life in the inland.

As Flynn's principal assistant in the 1930s, McKay helped co-ordinate a radio system for flying doctors in western Queensland. And it was from there that he dispatched a pedal radio message to a young woman training to be a nurse. "The most loving kiss you have ever received is being sent from the creek bed in Cloncurry," it said. McKay and the nurse, Margaret Robertson, of Brisbane, were married in 1938. McKay's much-used pedal radio, not to mention his swag, tucker box and billycan are now on display at the Fred McKay Gallery in Cloncurry.

In 1941 McKay volunteered for war service which was to take him into a theatre of operations about as far removed from the central Australian bush as it was possible to imagine. invited to attend her funeral wife of Gifford (deceased). Sadly In 1934, the Gold Coast was an undeveloped strip of south-east Queensland but the name would have appealed to the Rev Fred McKay, who has died, aged 92. In. 1934, McKay was a young Presbyterian minister in Southport and he loved the place. It was hardly surprising then that when John Flynn Flynn of the "Inland visited Southport and invited McKay to join his mission to central Australia, the offer was declined.

McKay was soon to change his mind and view differently his role as a minister and where that ministry should take him. While walking with McKay on Southport beach Flynn allowed sand to trickle through his fingers. "The sand of Birdsville is better than this," he said. Soon afterwards McKay relinquished a plan to acquire a postgraduate degree at Edinburgh University. Instead, he agreed to join the Australian Inland Mission (AIM) where, eventually, he was to win fame and honour as Flynn's successor.

Years later, referring to Flynn's demonstrative gesture with the sand, McKay laughed and explained: "That was how he got me in his clutches." Flynn and McKay formed issed bv a I her rami and I service, to be conducted in the West Cha Del. Woronora Crema friends. Burial for MR KEVIN TIMOTHY CROTTY will be celebrated In St Patricks Church. Elected moderator-general of the Presbyterian Church of Australia, McKay combined this role with his missionary activities and caused some controversy among Presbyterians in 1970 by taking part, as moderator, in a Sydney service to mark the visit of Pope Paul VI.

He retired from the AIM four years later to become associate minister of St Stephen's Uniting Church, Macquarie Street McKay already an OBE was awarded a CMG in 1972 and in 1991 made an honorary doctor of laws by the University of Queensland. During his career he made friends among the most distinguished as well as the most humble people in the nation. "He preached at the official funeral service for Sir Robert Menzies fulfilling a request from the former prime minister himself. He was a resident medical officer at the Mater Hospital, North Sydney, and began his lifelong association with obstetrics at St Margaret's Hospital, DarlinghursL At the Mater, he met Kerry. Theirs was a deep and passionate relationship.

They had three sons and formed a close family. They travelled to England where Spurrett became a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. He won the Harold Malkin Prize for the best research by a young member, and worked in Oxford. Returning to Australia he became deputy clinical superintendent at St Margaret's Hospital. Spurrett surprised many by electing to join an obstetric practice in Penrith on the western outskirts of Sydney.

The partnership provided a stable base from which Spurrett could expand his interest in improving maternity services and education. He was a founder of the Western Metropolitan Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society, a forum for education and discussion. When Westmead Hospital opened he was invited to establish a dysplasia clinic. At this time he also became involved in medical developments in Indonesia, a country in which he enjoyed years of personal and professional interest Spurrett was chairman of the Asian and Oceania Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology group committed to reducing maternal mortality. He encouraged the formation of the South Pacific Regional Obstetric and Gynaecology Society, and was elected the first president He applied for and was appointed associate professor and head of the division of women's and chil- families.

Obstetrician 1941-2000 It's a long way from Penrith to the scattered communities of Oceania, but such was the breadth of interests in the professional life of Associate Professor Brian Richard Spurrett, the Sydney obstetrician and gynaecologist who has died at the age of 58. Spurrett assisted at the birth of literally thousands of babies but was also a gifted teacher, an innovator and a stimulator of others. He did much to improve the lot of women and babies in western Sydney, South-East Asia and the Pacific. Because he was sincerely interested in other people, he liked to listen to their views and had a remarkable memory for people he'd met A man of imposing physical presence, his manner was gentle, his outlook optimistic and idealistic. And he could think big.

Experts, however, agree that she remained one of the most articulate spokeswomen that dance ever had for a dark indeed hopeless view of existence. "I haven't got that happy philosophy," she conceded, "but what the hell is there to be happy about?" She answered that question in a starkly innovative body of work that included one of the earliest American rock ballets, the confrontational Opus '65, a study of social alienation and defiance. Her most famous work, however, is arguably Rooms, a 45-minute depiction of urban isolation and despair, choreographed in 1955 to an astringent jazz score. Restaging it in 1976, she spoke contemptuously to the Los Angeles Times of dancers "who want it too She said: "I work more and more, and I am never satisfied. For me dance is a language to communicate feelings and I never lie.

In 1930, she joined the Martha Graham company, "doing nothing but standing in the background while she danced up she recalled a half-century later. The first public performance of her own group work, Anti-War Cycle, took place three years later, and she continued making social protest dances throughout the decade. As choreographer Agnes de Mille said at a tribute in 1991, two years before her own death: "Anna never did a dance because it was commercially easy to do. She always did the best she could, and with the highest vision.

We are all grateful to her for holding true, for forging down the road, no matter what the cost The best, always the best oh, Anna, thank you." Lewis Segal Los Angeles Times are kindly invited to attend. Dance pioneer 19157-2000 She once wrote bluntly: "The artist has to be a bastard." The pioneer American modern dance choreographer Anna Sokolow, who has died at her home in New York's Greenwich Village, was as good as her word. Although she mellowed in her later years, developing an unlikely affection for vintage film musicals, the uncompromising standards that made her a legend in the dance community endured right up to her death. Many sources say she recently turned 85 others say she was a little older than that But no matter. More to the point is why she isn't as well known as some of the acknowledged titans of modern dance.

Some say she never established a long-lived company to perform and preserve her body of work. It's my sense of justice. It doesn't make me popular, but I don't give a damn." In 1961 she won a Dance Magazine award. The citation read in part: "To Anna Sokolow, whose career has been distinguished by integrity and creative boldness, and whose recent concert works have opened the road to a penetratingly human approach to the jazz idiom." Her colleague, choreographer Jerome Robbins, wrote in 1986: "The body of her work is about the human experience. It unfolds with composure, strength, intuitiveness and compassion." She was born in Hartford, Connecticut, of Jewish immigrant parents, and grew up on New York's Lower East Side.
