Born in Kleiat, in the Lebanese province of Kesrwan, Hobeika was a rising star in the Phalange movement in 1978. He was said to have been deeply influenced by the massacre of much of his family and of his by Palestinian militiamen at Damur in 1976. His later notoriety depends much on an account of his life in a book, From Israel To Damascus: The Painful Road To Blood, Betrayal And Deception, by one of his bodyguards, Robert Hatem. The book covers Hobeika's alliance with Israel and his subsequent "betrayal" of the Christian resistance in return for Syrian political patronage.

Hatem claims that Hobeika's collaboration was crucial to Syrian control of Lebanon. He calls Hobeika a war criminal. "I was hypnotised," he writes. "I was doing what I was told, throwing people out of upper-storey windows, shooting others in the swimming pool." Edward Howell, producer at AWA, also saw Lovell and signed him to play co-lead with Marion logue.

Over the years, Neiman Marcus advertised outrageous and sumptuous gifts to indulge every whim. There were "His" and "Hers" submarines (three sets were sold) and even "His" and "Hers" camels. He was later contracted by James Raglan, who ran Raglan Radio Recordings; he appeared regularly in ABC plays and serials, and by the end of the decade he was established as one of radio's leading young actors. In 1939 he co-starred in the second Lux Radio Theatre production to go to air, Hands Across the Table. Lovell, a very good-looking young man, made his professional stage debut in 1940 at the Minerva Theatre, Kings Cross, in Terence Rattigan's French Without Tears.

After the war he played co-leads in the radio serials Big Sister and Crossroads of Life, both on 2UW; he co-starred with Lyndall Barbour in Danger Unlimited (QUE); and he played in Gwen Meredith's long-running serial Blue Hills. In 1950 he returned to the stage, working again with May Hollinworth who was now for the Metropolitan Theatre, playing the leading role in Raymond, Lord of Milan, a very early Australian play.
