"It's halfpenny stuff now a few tables pushed over because of Sunday trading and things like that," longtime shoe stall Mick Lowe, said yesterday. Another stallholder said grudges were still remembered particularly after the slaying of a Calabrian migrant about five years ago. But it was nothing like the days of the Victoria Market murders of 15 years ago. Six months after the Angilletta killing in 1964 market merchant Vincent Muratore was shot down outside his home in Hampton: Earlier a close associate of Muratore, commission agent Domenico Demarte, was seriously wounded. All three were Calabrians as many of Victoria's fruit and vegetable traders are today.

Three men were charged With the shootings "but there were no convictions. Police hampered in their investigations because of an unwritten law of silence amongst fellow villagers: The Coroner, Mr. Pascoe; said at the Angilletta inquest: "I feel many of the witnesses knew more than they were prepared to adr mit." GUNMAN WAS FIRST VICTIM Governmeht action in 1964 could have controlled the activities of Calabrian societies, an Italian expert on the mafia said "Fifteen years ago it could have, been controlled but not now," Dr. Ugo Macera, deputy chief of Italy's national police, Dr. Macera spent six months in Victoria in 1964 investigating Mafia activities for the State Government. Together with American narcotics Investigator Mr.

Robert Cusack, he advised Government to monitor tb workings of Calabrian criminal elements. Speaking from Rome, Dr. Macera said his research in Australia showed the secret Calabrian Honored Society was linked with the Mafia. "They work together;" he said. "These are very dangerous people, they are killers." Dr.

Macera said he lived with members of the homicide squad while working to uncover "Mafia" activities in Melbourne. He said his Investigation revealed strong ties between Melbourne-based "Mafia" and well established secret societies in Calabria. Dr. Macera said the Italian Mafia was almost impossible to stamp out and still figured prominently in organised crime, "Once it is established, you just can't break it," he said. Dr.

Macera said his 1964 investigation did not show any link between Melbourne "Mafia" and drugs. When told of the New South Wales Royal Commission findings, he said: "I am not surprised, the Mafia is involved with drugs everywhere now." Applications will be treated in confidence and should in Dr. Macera said he prepared a secret report for the State Government, mainly on Victoria Markets killings which occurred shortly before he arrived in Australia. His report went to the then Chief Secretary, Sir Arthur Rylah, as did the findings of Mr. Cusack.

A source within the 1964 Cabinet that commissioned the investigations said Ministers were not shown the reports. Sir Arthur Rylah reported on the general terms of the reports and said it would be handled by the police," the source said. "He was satisfied the police could do what was necessary." A source in the Chief Secretary's Department said the reports had been commissioned in the wake of Victoria Markets killings associated with the Calabrian community. "Sir Arthur was worried about the shootings and. there was a feeling Italian secret were bemud source said.

He said Mr. Cusack had told Sir Arthur that Australia, unlike America, was in a position to stop the secret societies gaining a permanent hold on organised crime. The source said the report had been passed ori to the then Chief Commissioner of Police, Mr. R. H.

Arnold. The present Chief Commissioner, Mr. Miller, declined to answer questions on the report and referred inquiries to the Chief Secretary, Mr. Thompson. Former Premier Sir Henry Bolte said he could only vaguely remember the Cuv sack investigation.

Instead it was Angiletta By DAVID ELIAS Vicenzo. Angiletta, the first victim of the Victoria Market shootings, began his career with the Honored Society as a smalltime gunman. Armed with a sub-machine gun, he and a band of about a dozen bandits specialised in terrorising and robbing small Calabrian villages.

By the time he arrived in Australia in 1951, the 35-year-old Angiletta had served five years in jail for armed robbery and had a list of convictions for wartime blackmarketing, carrying a firearm and armed robbery. When these were discovered after his "elimination" on April 4, 1963, politicians demanded to know why he had been allowed to enter Australia. The Federal Immigration Department replied that at the time of his arrival his record was not known and when it was later discovered he had appeared to have rehabilitated himself. He had Caused no trouble in Australia. But according to Mr.

Cusack. he was nossiblv a member of the Black Hand gang, an inner group of the Honored Society. At the same time he was working his way up through the ranks of the main arm of the society as an assessment enforcer and stand-over man for their Australian Domenico Italiano.
