The area represented an Australia that has largely disappeared, one with a co-operative spirit, where entertainment was improvised, the bush was the children's playground and there was less fear. In 1949 the family-moved to Canberra. There Clark attended Ainslie Infants and Primary School and Canberra High. In second grade he was subjected to a government intelligence test. The result was so astounding it was 47 points above the genius benchmark that the examiners returned to Canberra to check him again.

He completed his school education on a boarding scholarship at Melbourne Grammar School. There, he was known as a character but left an indelible mark in other ways. He won a state exhibition for ancient history, and impressed as an elegant bat in the school First XI. As a student at Melbourne University, and resident in Trinity College, at times his studies received a lower priority than all-night arguments, raffish dressing, imbibing in inner-city bars, mercurial socialising with members of the opposite sex and following the Carlton Football Club and the Australian cricket team. After graduating, he secured a tutorship in English literature at Sydney University.

There he met the love of his life, Alison Mclntyre. She left Sydney for Rome on an Italian government scholarship to pursue her Italian Died peacefully in Melbourne, PARR AM ATT A 9630 6444. on October 28. 2001. Loving husband to Beryl Australian Owned A.F.D.A.

Finally, approaching the age of 40, he had found his working focus. To manage the family's various needs, Clark commuted to Canberra and spent much of the week staying with his parents.

Alison, Tom, Solomon and Anna remained in Sydney, partly because Solomon, who has a disability, attended a special school. Physically, it was hard for Clark to teach. His energy levels were downThis hearing was deteriorating, but he loved it, and his students responded. At the same time, Alison emerged as a significant poet, and undertook a course in Jungian therapy. Both partners grew.

Clark continued his work on Henry Handel Richardson. In the mid -1980s he visited Leipzig and Berlin with his mother, and sent a postcard to a friend which read: "You will understand a lot about this place when you hear that I'm the best-dressed person in East Germany." In 1990, after his third operation, he published the first volume of his biography of Henry Handel Richardson, subtitled Fiction in the Making. The book was a clear and perceptive account of the breakdown of her doctor father, and her creative awakening. The critic Peter Craven wrote: "This country does not have many literary biographers of Axel Clark's calibre. His life of Henry Handel Richardson is both scrupulous and eloquent." A second volume, shortened by his ebbing strength, was published in late September.

It covers the years 1896-1910, when Henry Handel Richardson wrote Maurice Guest and The Getting of Wisdom. Clark attended the first launching of his Volume Two, titled Finding Herself in Fiction, in Melbourne, but by the time of the second launch, in Canberra on October 3, he had re-entered hospital. His final days were ones of great pain, but marked by astonishing bravery. To quote the lines he loved so much from Shakespeare's Cymbeline: "Fear no more the heat o' the sun, Nor the furious winter's rages; Thou thy worldly task hast done, Home art gone, and ta'en thy wages: Golden lads and girls all must, As chimney-sweepers, come to dust." His subject choice, Christopher Brennan, a poet who also taught German at Sydney University, presaged a quarter-century of rich involvement in Australian literature.

He formed the Brennan Society with Robin Marsden and it gave fresh impetus to the study of Australian writing. Queensland on Friday (November 2 2001 rommencmg at 2 Axel Clark Biographer and academic 1943-2001 Axel Clark, a significant figure in Australian literary criticism, biography and teaching, died on Wednesday in Sydney after a 25-year battle with brain tumours and cancer.

He was 58. Clark was the third child of historian Professor Manning Clark and Dymphna Clark. His influence will endure through his two-volume biography of Henry Handel Richardson, a giant of Australian literature who was compared, in her lifetime, with Tolstoy and Zola. It has also been deepened by a granite-like integrity, sophistication as a critic, and his impact on students. Clark and his wife, Alison, a distinguished poet, Jungian therapist and Italian linguist, ran a stimulating, welcoming table at their Newtown home.

Authors such as Patrick White, David Malouf, Drusilla Modjeska, Murray Bail and Susan Butler, the driving force behind The Macquarie Dictionary, were regular guests. But any suggestion of an inner-Sydney literary salon would be met with a guffaw, a crude quip about the habits of some suggestible French figure like Madame Recamier, or a Proustian putdown. Clark liked to sing, whistle and joke, and revelled in wordplay, particularly of an earthy, Australian variety, before illness shrank those exuberant qualities out of him. He was also well-known for his generosity, and love for family. He was a gentle man.

Few understood that behind frequent displays of intellectual cheekiness there was, at the core of him, a mulish stubbornness and independence, one that came out with such extraordinary courage in the final days of his life. His family background, natural gifts and eccentricity had marked him out to ultimately march to no-one's drum but his own. Axel Clark was born in Melbourne at the height of World War II. His family lived in Croydon, a cluster of bushy blocks on the fringe of the city's northern suburbs. Croydon helped shape Clark; it gave him values that The funeral service for Norman will be held in the West Chaoel Woronora Crematorium.

99809935 figure, with a following in Sydney's bohemian circles, but also a dipsomaniac and depressive whose later life was marked by misery and neglect. It was around this time that Clark was afflicted by a terrible scourge, but no-one then knew what it was. Physically, he became slower, sometimes walking with a stagger. He found it hard to get up in the mornings, suffered from bouts of nausea and needed a rest in the middle of the day. In 1979, at a dinnertime meeting of the Brennan Society, he collapsed.

For the previous three years he had been told his problems were psychosomatic, but after an operation to relieve pressure from his brain, new tests revealed he had a brain tumour. To be precise, he had a malignant ependymoma in the fourth ventricle at the back of his head. This is a slow-growing tumour, and may have been troubling him since he was a teenager. Because of its sensitive positioning near the central nervous system, the entire tumour could not be removed. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy followed, plus a long convalescence.

Clark's initial recovery from the trauma of the operation did not mask a later, more gradual deterioration in his overall physical condition. This deterioration was exacerbated by further operations on his ependymoma tumour in 1988 and 1989, and an operation to remove a benign tumour at the end of last year. But out of adversity emerged a professional and intellectual devoted father of Greg. Karen Leanne and Justine and father-in-law of Terry. Steve and Mark.

It was on Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part II, and it was the character of Falstaff who particularly absorbed him. Clark adapted Falstaff humour and zest for life to a 1970s, inner-city milieu. He and Alison returned to Australia in the early 1970s, bought a house in Newtown and father and, like him, loved every grain of soil that made up the Australian earth. His mother, a brilliant German linguist, greatly assisted him in his work on Brennan and, later, Henry Handel Richardson, who had spent much of her youth as a music student in Leipzig. With the beginning of the international activities of the medical faculty, Wilma was deeply involved in contacts with all those involved in Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and the United States. She provided a bridge to many European groups because of her knowledge of Europe and her ability to speak German. She made many trips overseas, at her own expense, essentially on full-time work for the faculty. Wilma's health, never robust, deteriorated. She had two artificial hips following fractures, and suffered from arthritis and a duodenal ulcer, from which complications led to her death.

But she remained an indomitable spirit. Wilma was fiercely protective of her staff, and fearless when confronting medical staff (up to the level of the greatly feared chairman of the board, Sir Herbert Schlink) when she believed they were not behaving in a manner commensurate with her own high standards. She inspired and educated her staff -and many resident medical officers. She always treasured a comment a senior surgeon made when she threatened to resign through frustration: "Don't do that hundreds of patients owe their lives to you." After marriage, Wilma gave Geoffrey unstinting support at Sydney and Monash universities.
