All the President's Men mm from which one dies or recovers. It is something of an anticlimax that the pathetic antihero does recover. Taxi Driver is mainly remarkable for its powerful New York mood, in which the riveting photography plays a big part, but it is the laic Hernanl Herrmann's intensely haunting music which adds the essence of H-'-city blues to this striking film. There are flashes of memory or imagination, glimpses of springtime breaking as the old life ebbs away in a musty house in a Budapest suburb. The old woman does not know that her son is a political prisoner (a victim of Stalinist times, since the story is supposed to take place in 1953; but the woman's short skirts suggest a later decade).

It is a sad film, but the sadness brims with an extraordinarily delicate compassion. One must accept the slow way in which Kar-loy Makk, the director, wends his way through to the poignant ending; onl at this sombre pace could the heartache and beaut of this film makes their full impact. (G, Village, Double Bay). This movie is sure to be a great success, but it won't necessarily be because of its brilliant reconstruction of the Watergate story. Most people have forgotten about that by now.

As for the impressive skill of direction, the realistic, clear dialogue, or the fact that it relives, with mounting suspense, one of the most incredible scandals of this century not even these could have ensured this film's success away from America. There's no sex, no violence, and most of it is telephone calls or takes place behind office desks. But it can't miss, because it also offers two hours in the company of those charismatic Dustin Hoffmann and Robert Redford, as the dedicated newspaper reporters, Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward, from the Washington Post, who were responsible for the whole shake-up. Travis is under-educated and of low level intelligence, but, as he drives, he formulates a reply which leaves the dapper senator without an answer: "It's this city it's like an open sewer." And so the camera shows it. This is a mature film, but it could have been even belter (and not so long) if it had not exceeded its quota of psychological insights.

It shows desperate loneliness amidst the" soulless city lights; How Lee Harvey Oswalds are made, and how a little fame and admiration can work a miraculous cure on a broken mind. This last development seems a contrived one, as was the happy outcome of that fine film, Alice Doesn't Live Here Any More, also directed by Martin Scorsese. Life is ugly, but why not have a cheerful ending, seems to be Scorsese's motto. In many ways, this is a suspense picture, as we watch a realistic account of a man sinking into private, secret insanity with disaster as the only possible outcome. This is a picture to appeal to film star fans and practical thinkers alike. (M, Village, Cinema City.

Bankstown and P'matta). Taxi Driver if THIS is a notable picture in the new tradition of American self-casti-gation. The words which ring truest are those uttered by the lonely young New York taxi driver, Travis (a most convincing Robert Giselle is the story of a German peasant girl who falls in love with a Duke, commits suicide when she finds he is already betrothed and becomes one of the vengeful Wilis spirits in the forest. The ballet is in full colour, completely without sound except for the lovely music and in two parts (for the two acts). It occupies the entire program.

This is a film even for people who would be bored stiff by ballet on stage. A 30 cent program which tells the story is on sale at the box office and can be a worthwhile investment. The sensitivity of characterisation by all the cast, in particular the principals Carla Frac-ci as Giselle, Erik Briilin as Duke Albrecht brings out the drama and pathos of the touching story. Children in the audience loved it. They danced ballet steps in the cinema foyer afterwards.

(Mayfalr, G). My Sweet Lady This film is nothing but a vehicle for songs by John Denver. They include Sunshine On My Shoulders, Take Me Home Country Roads and the title of the film itself. My Sweet Lady. The story involves a young man with a guitar and a heart of gold who is trying to bring up the cutest little girl you ever saw, freckled nose and all.

She keeps asking questions about death and life and love and Sam (Cliff De Young) does his gallant best to lie hoth mother and father to her. The child, played by Elizabeth Cheshire, is pretty competent for a child actor but she is always complaining and by no means easy to like. There's a lot "of singing and guitar playing of sweet sentimental songs which arc fine, if you like that sort ot thing. One of the main reasons is that it captures moments of highly private intimacy without any sense of prying, and whilst showing no more than need be covered by a certificate.
