All round' Is tho sin ot the crqee the Roil Cross tbat stands lor love' and sympathy, tho Cross that stands for humanity. The matron and: tbe mines wore short red caps about their shoulders. On all the quilts were large Red Looking out ot the window one saw the words "Red Cross" upon the garden seats. This man In C. ward was a soldler.who had done tho State some service.

We who stay at home can serve our country, too. And we cannot serve It bettor then by serving those who fight for us, and, after tho right, como back to us with their wounds upon thorn. It Is through the Red Cross that wo can chiefly serve them. It Is true that the Government provides for our sick and wounded soldiers; but we can add greatly to the comforts tbat Government provides, and Is at' once a privilege and a duty to add to them. For this man Is your brother, and that man mno: this man Is some husband, and that one some woman's son.

And there Is no such thing as olass and class these days, nor family and famly we are all one In the great cause. There has been some criticism lust a little of Red Cross methods. There has been orltlclBm of the purchase of linoleums out of Red Cross funds to cover the floors of tho wards In this great Institution at Randwlck can aayt Ar Impenetrable secrocy enshrouds the result. We are told that a certain number ot men have, been offered and accepted at this or that recruiting centre, but no one has told us in so many words what, the proportion to ellglbles has been. What we do know Is that many ellglbles are not offering themselves, and many wbo should not have been asked to go' to the front on account ot tbelr obligations at home are, nevertheless, going.

There seems to havo been no effort, eveu at this lato date, towards systomatlslng the business of recruiting, nor does there seem to have been any adequate lend from Federal Ministers. What Is being asked at. the street corners Is whether the Minister for Defence really wants any accession to tbe number of recruits? Would a large accession be embarrassing to him? Is he satisfied with things as they Are? In the light of the absence of recruiting speeches by Federal Ministers would almost seem its If they were not anxious to have more men thrust upon them.
